16-day Journey to Botswana (2020)

***This safari is now FULL***

Botswana is a land of dramatic contrasts, from the crystal-clear waters of the Okavango Delta to the large elephant herds in the Chobe National Park and the desert-like landscape of Makgadikgadi Pans. Blessed with some of Africa’s most beautiful subtropical wilderness reserves and an array of African wildlife, Botswana is an unforgettable safari destination.

The Okavango Delta is a magical oasis. Water in the desert is a truly spectacular sight. The wide, grassy floodplains are host to a magnificent array of wild animals, including the specially adapted sitatunga and lechwe antelopes. Chobe National Park is famed for having Africa’s largest single concentration of elephant, while Moremi Game Reserve is renowned for its brilliant birdlife.

This itinerary has been designed for those who love wildlife. We use a combination of tented camps, lodges, ‘private’ full-service mobile tenting and a house boat to visit Botswana’s famed wildlife areas.

African Safaris Ltd – We are a travel agency specialising in safaris to Africa.  We are New Zealand based, owned and operated.  Our team have travelled extensively around Africa and return regularly to ensure our knowledge is up-to-date. We aim to provide guests with a true safari experience.  Consequently, unlike many itineraries, we like to use smaller lodges and camps, thereby keeping guests away from crowds of other tourists, and at the same time providing an unforgettable experience of a lifetime.  In Botswana, in particular, on this safari it is just our group and Botswana team – no other guests will be staying with us while explorer tenting, providing a very unique experience away from the crowds. Our guests love this itinerary, for its variety, along with Claire’s wildlife knowledge, expertise and local knowledge – the combination makes for a great experience.

Tour Host – Claire is the founder and director of African Safaris Ltd.  She is an experienced zoologist, wildlife photographer and author of non-fiction children’s books, who has not only lived in Africa, but has also been travelling to the continent for more than 20 years.  Claire’s passion for Africa started in 1993 as a conservation volunteer in Botswana during which time she assisted several wildlife researchers with their projects and completed two of her own research projects.  Using her extensive knowledge, Claire has published more than 60 children’s educational books about animals.  These books have been photographically illustrated using her images.  Claire spends between two and three months in Africa each year.

Type of Safari: A combination road and flying safari.  All inter-camp flights are included.

Botswana:  1-night lodge, 5-nights luxury tented camp, and 5-nights fully-serviced explorer tenting
Namibia:     2 nights houseboat
Zimbabwe: 2 nights hotel

This safari includes a total of 14 days in national parks and game reserves, thereby providing wonderful wildlife viewing opportunities; 2 nights Makgadikgadi (where we have opportunity to walk with the San people), 3 nights in the Okavango Delta, 5 nights in Moremi Game Reserve and 2 nights on the mighty Chobe River in a houseboat.  We finish off in Victoria Falls, a UNESCO Heritage sight and one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the world.  One of the main features guests enjoy about this safari is the variety accommodation which is a combination of luxury tented camps, private fully-service mobile tenting, house boat and lodges.

Five nights on safari are privately guided fully-serviced mobile tenting; which always stands out as a favourite part of the itinerary with our guests.  On this part of the itinerary we travel with Clinton, a professional guide we have worked with for many years. Our guests just love Clinton.  He started his guiding career in Zimbabwe in 1992. The guiding courses in Zimbabwe are amongst the toughest in Africa – taking 4 years to qualify.  In the recent years he has worked in the filming industry for independent filming companies, as well as working in filming projects for National Geographic and Discovery Channel.  With Clinton we travel as one unit with his team. Improvements in modern camp equipment, lighting, refrigeration, and hot water allow a quality lifestyle under canvas in the wilds of Africa, whilst maintaining that ‘pioneering’ feel.  We enjoy spacious tents with en-suite shower/toilet, comfortable beds and linen. Our safari chef prepares delicious meals and camp assistants are there to look after your every need.

We also use a variety of transportation on safari, including 4WD, light aircraft, motorboat and mokoro (traditional dug-out canoe), and houseboat.  These different modes of transport allow you with the opportunity to experience Botswana’s unique wildlife from land and water.
